Olives and Olive Oil
The olive comes from a blessed tree and Allah mentioned it seven times in the Quran.
Allah said:
{وَالتِّينِ وَالزَّيْتُونِ}
By the fig and the olive
[Surah at-Teen, 95:1]
Sheikh Abdulrahman as-Sadi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in explaning this Verse, "Allah swore by these two trees due to the immense benefit contained in these trees and likewise in their fruit."
Ibn ' Abbaas (R) said: This refers to the figs and the olives that you know. Then he said: The olive tree is a blessed tree.
Allah said:
{اللَّهُ نُورُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ مَثَلُ نُورِهِ كَمِشْكَاةٍ فِيهَا مِصْبَاحٌ الْمِصْبَاحُ فِي زُجَاجَةٍ الزُّجَاجَةُ كَأَنَّهَا كَوْكَبٌ دُرِّيٌّ يُوقَدُ مِنْ شَجَرَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَا غَرْبِيَّةٍ يَكَادُ زَيْتُهَا يُضِيءُ وَلَوْ لَمْ تَمْسَسْهُ نَارٌ نُورٌ عَلَى نُورٍ يَهْدِي اللَّهُ لِنُورِهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَضْرِبُ اللَّهُ الْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ وَاللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ}
"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth.
The parable of His Light (if there were) a niche within it a lamp:
The lamp is in a glass, the glass as it were a brilliant star, lit from a blessed tree, an olive, neither of the east (i.e. neither it gets sun-rays only in the morning) nor of the west(i.e. nor it gets sun-rays only in the afternoon, but it is exposed to the sun all day long), whose oil would almost glow forth(of it self), though no fire touched it.
Light upon Light!
Allah guides to His Light whom He wills. And Allah sets forth parables for mankind, and Allah is All-Knower of everything".
[Surah Al-Noor, 24:35]
Imam Ash-Shawkani (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned in his tafseer collection Fathul Qadeer, that olive oil comes from a blessed tree as Allah mentions and that it also comes from a blessed land. He also mentioned that the arabs used to use olive oil for their hair.
"And a tree (olive) that springs forth from Mount Sinai, that grows (produces) oil, and (it is a) relish for the eaters".
[surah Al-Mu'minoon, 23:20]
Al-Qurtabi (R) said: What is meant here is the olive tree. It is singled out for mention because of its great benefits.
Allah said:
{هُوَ الَّذِي أَنْزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاءً لَكُمْ مِنْهُ شَرَابٌ وَمِنْهُ شَجَرٌ فِيهِ تُسِيمُونَ
يُنْبِتُ لَكُمْ بِهِ الزَّرْعَ وَالزَّيْتُونَ وَالنَّخِيلَ وَالْأَعْنَابَ وَمِنْ كُلِّ الثَّمَرَاتِ إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآَيَةً لِقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ}
He it is Who sends down water from the sky; from it you drink and from it (grows) the vegetation on which you send your cattle to pasture.
With it He causes to grow for you the crops, the olives, the date-palms, the grapes, and every kind of fruit.
Verily! In this is indeed an evident proof and a manifest sign for people who give thought.
[Soorah an-Nahl:10-11]
Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah narrated that Abu Hurairah Radi Allaho Anh related from Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam that he said:
“Eat the Zait and use it as an ointment because it is produced from a blessed tree”.
Al-Bayhaqi and Ibn Majah narrated that Abdullah Bin Urnar Radi Allaho Anh said that the Messenger of Allah (Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam) said:
“Eat the oil (IN CURRIES) and use it as an ointment because it is from a blessed tree”.
Narrated by Tirmizi in the book of Shamail, on the authrity of Anas Bin Malik Radi Allaho Anh that "Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam would escessively put the Zait (olive oil) in his head & beard, (and because of that, he would keep a small piece of cloth called QINA'A under his cap), and his Qina'a was full of the oil, like the clothes of an oil miller".
Zait (Olive Oil) is hot and wet in the first degree. The quality of oil depends on the tree that produces it. For instance, the best type of olive oil is that squeezed from ripe olives while oil from unripe olives is cold and dry. Red olives produce oil that is between these while black olives produce hot and wet oil. Olive oil helps against poisons, works as a laxative and rids the body of worms. Old olive oil leans more towards being hot and decomposing. When olive oil is blended with water, it becomes less hot, milder, and thus more beneficial. All kinds of olive oil soften the skin and slow the aging process. The salty water blended with oil helps burnt skin against blistering. It also strengthens the gingival (gums), while olive leaves help against erysipelas (skin infections), sores, septic ulcers, and urticaria (hives). There are many other benefits for olive oil.
The word ائْتَدِمُوا is derived from the Arabic word إدام Idaam which means curry. ائْتَدِمُوا thus means that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam advised to cook the curries in the blessed olive oil.
Furthermore, the two Hadith mentioned above do not mention the name of tree for the oil,
It exhibits that the only oil recommended for eating, cooking or massaging is the blessed Olive oil (from the blessed tree). It is a miracle that Allah Has Exemplified His NOOR (light) with an olive tree.
You will never imagine how powerful were the words written (before 700 years) by Imam Zahabi. His research on Olive Oil is the best in this world. People in those times never had the concept of extra virgin, Virgin OR Pomace Oil, they only extracted the oil & used it (after filtration) for cooking, which interprets that Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the best.
Imam Zahabi wrote :
Zait Zaitoon Al-Infaaq is the one which is extracted from un-ripe (green) olives & its nature is cold & dry, Olive Oil which is pressed from ripe olives is moderately hot & wet natured, and as the olives ripen, more is the heat obtained in the oil. Massaging by Olive Oil strengthens the hairs (prevents hair loss) & organs, & massaging the body slows down the AGING.
Drinking Olive Oil helps against poisons, cleanses the stomach, relieves stomach pains & kills the intestinal worms.
All the cooking OILS weaken the stomach except Olive Oil, and Oil from un-ripe olives is the best in this concern.
Narrated by Ibn Umar Radi Allaho Anh that Prophet Muhammad Sallallaho Alaihe Wasallam said “ Cook with the Oil & use it for massage, as it is from a blessed tree”.
Allah Said in the Holy Quran :
وَشَجَرَةً تَخْرُجُ مِن طُورِ سَيْنَاء تَنبُتُ بِالدُّهْنِ وَصِبْغٍ لِّلْآكِلِينَ
23:20 Also a tree springing out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil, and relish for those who use it for food.
Narrated by Tirmizi “Eat the Oil & use it for massaging”.
Also narrated by Ibn Al Jauzi that Ilqamah Bin Amir said “You have the Olive Oil, eat it & massage with it as it is the best for PILES”.
It was also narrated that whoever uses Olive Oil for massaging, Sheytaan never comes close to him / her”.
Someone said that Olive Oil is the Tiryaaq for Fuqaraa, which means that it removes the POVERTY (by bringing the blessings in house & by keeping the body away from diseases).
Green Olives are cold & dry, best as a food, strengthen the digestion, ignite the libido, & prevent the formation of gaseous vapors. Black Olives are hot & dry, create black bile & are difficult to digest. Salted Olives are good against fire burns. Chewing Olive leaves is beneficial for mouth ulcers, oral thrush, skin irritations, bacterial infections, Urticaria & sores.
The Vitamin E contained in Olives is the body’s primary fat-soluble antioxidant. Anti-oxidants help to strengthen the body’s immune system; reducing the severity of asthma, cancer, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis, premature ageing, as well as delaying the effects of ageing. Olives contain compounds called polyphenols that appear to have significant anti-inflammatory properties.
1) Olive oil can also be used on hands, hair and as a base for massage oil.
2) Used as a balm, it fortifies the hair.
3) It keeps the hair shiny and prevents dandruff.
4) Used as a balm, it fortifies and moisturizes the skin, combating dry skin and softening it. It also combats against acne.
5) Massaged onto the body, Olives fortify the limbs, combat against inflammation, and sooth away aches and pains from tired muscles and so on.
6) Help against wrinkles and delaying the effects of old age.
7) Help combat against strokes, heart-disease, High blood pressure, diabetes.
8) It aids digestion and strengthens the bowels, as well as the stomach.
9) Soothes pain
10) Strengthens the body’s immune system
11) Drink, the tea from Olive leaves help against High blood pressure.
12) General consumption of Olives, due to their high anti-Oxidant properties, help to combat against diseases such as cancer (studies in particular show Breast cancer), asthma, arthritis, osteoporosis, and others.
As regards to the Zaytun tree, Allah (Ta'ala) says:"And a tree that grows on mount Saini which provides oil – and enjoyment for those who eat it" [23:20]
Indeed, Allah Ta'ala has mentioned the Olive tree as being blessed as well; "a blessed Tree, an Olive, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil is well-nigh luminous.." [surah 24: 35] bn Umar recorded the well-known hadith "use olive oil and anoint yourself with it, because it is 'from a blessed tree'"(24:35) [al-Bayhaqi]
It is recorded that the Prophet said "Every kind of olive oil is for you, and anoint yourself with it.." [ibn al-Juzi].
The Prophet used to recommend olives and saffron in cases of pleurisy, and he used to say that olives are the medicine of the poor.
In another tradition Muhammad said "Eat olive oil and anoint yourself with it" [at-Tirmidhi]. Saied al-Ansari narrates that the Prophet said, "Eat the olive oil and massage it over your bodies since it is a blessed tree." [at-Tirmidhi, ibn Maja]
Abu Hurairah RadiAllahu Ta'ala anhu narrates that the Prophet stated , "Eat the olive oil and apply it (locally), since there is cure for seventy diseases in it, one of them is Leprosy." [abu Naim]
Khalid Bin Sa'd narrates "I came to Madinah with Ghalib Bin Al Jabr. Ghalib became ill during the journey. Ibn Abi Ateeq came to see him and told a narration from Aisha that the Prophet told about the cure in Kalonji.
We crushed a few seeds of Kalonji and mixed it with olive oil and dropped in both nostrils, after which Ghalib became healthy."[ibn Majah, Bukhari] The human body easily absorbs olives. This aids digestion, and so your body can handle food with ease. Imam Jalaluddin as-Suyuti in his book, "Medicine of the Prophet" suggests drinking Olive oil so as to keep the bowels moving, soothing pains and combating constipation. The juice of the olive, otherwise known as olive oil (Zayt), is a delicious source of antioxidants. This oil is monounsaturated, and it has a positive effect on the cholesterol level in our blood streams, by helping to reduce it. Monounsaturated fats are an important part of our diets. These oils act to keep cholesterol from sticking to our artery walls, and thus combating against diseases such as heart disease and strokes. Not only that, but they help to control blood sugar, a big plus in offering protection against Diabetes.
The roots of the Zaytun tree are so extensive and strong that in times of drought, when other trees die, the zaytuna tree is still standing because it draws from deep within the earth when the heavens withhold their life-giving water.
Olives are also very light foods (i.e. contain low calories), but at the same time very filling; being able to quickly satisfy hunger. And lead to fewer total calories ingested at mealtime. According to ibn al-Qayyim, Olives are an exhilarant, they provide prevention against poisons, gives the facial complexion glow, regulates the digestive process, expels the intestinal parasites, makes the hair lustrous and minimises ageing problems.
He also comments that the massage of olive oil with common salt over the gums is a remedy for several diseases of gums and teeth. The chronic ulcers and boils, which show difficult healing condition, are healed up with the use of olive oil generally. The local application of olive oil or the water extracted from the crushed olive oil leaves is effective on boils, rashes and itching.
Imam Tirmidhi (in the Shama'il of at-Tirmidhi) mentions that it was reported that the Prophet used so much olive oil that his shawl was often saturated with it.
